What is Bump to Baby?

Bump to Baby is a hand painted series of fruits and vegetables illustrating the pregnancy journey. Each week, the average fetus size is represented by a different fruit or vegetable. Bump to Baby is a delightful way to follow baby’s growth and record your unique pregnancy journey. Part art, part journal.

Bump to Baby creator, Jen Aboki, wanted to create a gift which was a bit different to the usual bibs, nappies and onesies. So over 12 months, she painted and designed set of creative cards as a special gift for her expectant friend. Secretly, she looks forward to giving this gift to herself when the time comes.

The Story

In 2013, Jen, received an important call from her friend. She had a surprise, a "we must meet in person" surprise. Really, at Jen's age, she knew when one of her friends said they had a surprise, it was usually marriage or babies. Jen had her bet on babies.

Jen will always remember what her friend she said that day as she smiled at her 14 week bump, "did you know, my baby is the size of a lemon?"

For a minute Jen was baffled, a lemon?

After a moment Jen realised that fruits are the perfect way to compare the growth of a fetus as plants start from seed too. She decided to create the perfect personalised gift for her friend and any friend who gave birth from that day forward.

Since starting Bump to Baby in June 2013, Jen realised this gift would be great for a lot of expecting parents. By creating Bump to Baby, Jen believes she has solved all her baby present dilemmas. The next time a friend shares the news, she'll have a gift that is the perfect balance between pretty and practical.

Baby showers are most commonly held early in the third trimester, around 32 weeks. Baby is the size of a papaya.
So let's play around with the numbers with the UK as an example. The birth rate in the UK, according to the CIA, is 1.4 babies per minute. That would be about 2,144 babies each day. Say 28% of these mum's had a baby shower. Each day there could be 600 baby showers. Then if each of these mum's receives one gift worth £50. That's £30,000 on baby gifts on any given day!
