Natural Skincare – Food For Your Skin

NaturalIt is not just mental health that is important…  the other parts that make up a person are too… Like your physical body. Now, that is pretty important, especially when you consider that it is the vessel you roam this world in. Someone once told me that the skin is the largest organ in your body and it absorbs a percentage of the stuff you put on it. Now the amount of absorption is debatable… and my brief search did not find any conclusive results. I encourage you to further investigate if you are curious (and let me know too!).

So the reason I bring this up is because of my recent interest in using more natural products. Well, if truth be told this interest started when we were brainstorming activity ideas for our visitors and a natural skincare workshop seemed very appealing. I wanted to share with you what we made. Surprisingly it was so, so, so simple and made from ingredients you most likely already have. Simple and healthy for your skin, that’s the best! This is the first of our recipes, there will be more to come.

Treat yourself to a DIY steam facial

Before each treatment it’s recommended to steam face over hot water for a few minutes. All we did was boil some water, pour it into a bowl and hover our face over the bowl. Be careful not to put your face to close, it happened in our workshop. For extra effect, you can place a towel over your head to keep the heat and steam in, or just use your hands.

Oat Facial Mask

Breakfast on your face…?

Makes 3
  • 250g oats
  • Few tablespoons of honey
  • Water (just enough to cover the oats)

Oats Facial Mask1. Soak the oats for few hours. Strain the soaked oats (using a mesh strainer or through a muslin cloth), this will separate the liquid from solids. Let the liquid sit and keep the bottom opaque layer as best you can.

2. Add honey. Heat in the microwave for 30 seconds (10 seconds at a time) or until it starts to thicken (should be the consistency like gravy).

3. Scoop a small amount on your fingers and rub a thin layer on your face. Leave it for up to 10 minutes and wash it off with warm water. Keep it in the fridge after use.

Benefits of Oats

Oats facial masks are a great facial cleanser. They cleanse the skin by opening up the pores and flushing out the dirt. It’s known for its anti-inflammatory properties, helping you treat any mild skin irritations you may have and also helps enhance the texture of the skin leaving it smooth. It’s suitable for all skin types and if used regularly, provides a great facial skin care.


It was quite amusing, and slightly embarrassing, that at the beginning of the workshop we went around and shared about our skin cleansing process. I had to say, I did very little other than splash water on my face. The creation process was simple, it just needed a little time. Smoothing it over my face was interesting but I loved it, despite the gooeyness of the honey… quite a fun texture, just make sure you wash it all off! The bonus is, that the honey makes it smell great! After the oat cleanse, my skin felt so soft.
